| Wednesday, November 12 ..... No Posts in Mar-Nov'08 ..... |
It has been more than 5 months that I do not put up any posts. There are many reasons behind it. One of the reasons is that I have cut off my home internet access to cut down on unnecessary expenses. Again, I'm the only one internet-user at home. It's quite expensive for me to subscribe to any internet plans. No worries, I try my best to put up more posts when I have chances to use free wifi internet outside. |
| Monday, March 10 ..... Welcome to My World - Post-Production ..... |
The concert was over! Met several supporters after the concert ended. :) Also, I received many sms from those who were unable to meet me. I wish to tell those supporters... Thanks, everyone for coming down to support us. We all appreciate these overwhelming support.. Hmmm, I can say, I have done my best although I know I made a few mistakes in my song Alla Turca. Supposedly, it should be perfect by now as I first practiced and performed it in June 2007. From my teacher who attended the concert last Saturday, he advised me to work hard on my semi-quavers. More balanced and equal... I will remember it. Thanks, Mr Damien and I appreciate it. Before the concert started, I was quite stressed. I made a lot of mistakes during the full-dress rehearsal and sound check. :( Even worse, the string in my marimba snapped off twice when it was being tightened to avoid a funny "tack" sound when I hit that higher C-sharp note. :( A few minutes before the door started to open for audience to enter, almost every problem is solved. Whew! I prayed hard that I must give it a best shot when performing that song. I did! :) Alright, now, I have given this a few thoughts. I got to look for another solo piece and looks like I got to find help from people in music expertise - Mr Damien, Angeline or Mr Jonathan Fox. If not, I will look around and I will ask people who love music. Hope I can help enough help. Also, I hope to get to hear something from Azariah and I hope to perform a duet with him one day. :) |
| Sunday, March 2 ..... Back Home fro Phnom Penh ..... |
Finally, home sweet home... Nice to be back home. Well, I can say, the stay at Phnom Penh was quite enjoyable because I made many new friends with deaf youths from Vietnam, Japan and Cambodia. Not only them, but I met many persons from different countries like Belgium, Mexico, Australia. They work in Cambodia to help develop arts in disabled community. Cool, right? Things at Phnom Penh are really backward. Not much for my shopping experience. I bought nice gifts for my family and good friends only and I hope that they like them. There got interesting culture and history, although it's a small town. Oh yes, before I go off, I can say, the festival was really great. I was informed that this such festival will be organized again next year, but the place where the arts festival can be celebrated is yet to be announced. Anyway, I'm looking forward to it. Alright, I will upload the photos when I have time. |
| Friday, February 22 ..... Departing from T2 ..... |
Departing from Changi Airport, T2 to Phnom Penh, Cambodia... With 3 people. Began to miss people around me. However, there are some feelings of anticipation, excitement and worries down inside me. Hope to meet some new faces. Also, I hope to see Ramesh over there. :) |
| Friday, February 15 ..... Cambodia ..... |
Quite keen to go there to Cambodia next week... because there are many opportunities to meet different people - of different countries. Also, it's special as they share their cultural arts with one another.. Looking forward to it! :) |

| Sunday, February 3 ..... Arts @BP - Fajar Shopping Centre ..... |
Guess it was my first solo performance in the year of 2008. I performed these 2 same solo songs in the heartland area - Fajar Shopping Centre. Quite far for me, however it was alright. Again, I was alone. Quite sianz... These 2 songs may be common to you. I can't help signing them because I'm very familiar and I can do without any help. I was unable to find anyone who can help me with music cues or reflecting in sign language. Hmmm, it's a time for me to make a little change. Will add more songs to my list. Hope I can achieve this simple goal. Not only this, but I also need help from someone who has more time... |

| Friday, February 1 ..... Moonbird ..... |
Moonbird (a picture book written by Joyce Dunbar) About Moonbird: The prince cannot hear the sounds of the Earth but a magical moonbird teaches him how to speak with his hands and listen with his eyes. "When a book is simple and good by the judgement of children, it is very good indeed. MOONBIRD is just such an extraordinary work, Across pages which have all the splendour of a medieval tapestry, the deaf prince, like a truth telling child from a Wilde fairy tale, teaches the court new and deeper forms of communication." - Irish Times Joyce Dunbar is the author of over seventy books for children, translated into many languages. Her Mouse and Mole series was made into a TV animation with the voices of Alan Bennet and Richard Briers. Joyce is a lip reader and has written several stories about deaf children: Mundo and the Weather Child, a novel, was runner up for the Guardian award in 1986, and more recently Moonbird, a picture book, illustrated by Jane Ray, was the Sunday Times Book of the Week. She is perhaps best known for Tell Me Something Happy Before I Go To Sleep. She was for many years a teacher of literature in Further Education and for the past seven years has been a creative writing facilitator on the holistic Greek island of Skyros. She is currently a RLF Writing Fellow at the University of East Anglia. ~~~~~~~~ Last Wednesday, I went for the audition to act in I Theatre's upcoming musical project - Moonbird, together with 6 other deaf candidates. The audition went in two teams of 4 and 3. There were three parts in the audition: human-acting, animal-acting & puppetry. However, I'm informed today that I'm not selected. Congrats to Freddie and Erika, I wish them all the best. I'm not disappointed. At least, that audition gave me this opportunity to initiate my curiosity about Moonbird and I Theatre. To me, it's another good thing that I can explore other areas: puppetry, musical theatre, kinds of target audience - children, youth & family. I'm quite aware that my target audience is youths & adults when I go out to perform. This is obvious. So, I have to think again about my direction in music & performing line. May the Force be with me... |
| Thursday, January 31 ..... More Jobs ..... |
Today, I signed two appointment letters with SSD and MVS as an adjunct Music Teacher. Another two part-time jobs are added to my number of jobs I currently hold. I believe that with these two part-time jobs, I'll be given 3E's opportunities - to explore, to educate and to experience - in both of the ways that will benefit myself and people around me. I started with SSD quite recently. My first day was 17 January. I teach every Thursday from 9:30AM to 12PM. For MVS, my commencement is in mid-March. I got to prepare items for these two schools' events. Quite challenging for me...! ~~~~~~~~ Dear GOD, I pray in the name of Jesus that I put myself in GOD's hands for inspirations. Hope I can manage with these challenges. Whatever problems I face, I leave them to GOD and He will help me solve these problems all the way. AMEN! |
| Thursday, January 17 ..... My Blogspot Changes ..... |
For two days, I have exported all the blog entries from the Blogspot to the Wordpress. However, the blog in the Wordpress is not up and ready. What changes did I do to this Blogspot? (1) I have set the nature of my blog and it shall focus on my music & travel experiences. Also, info on deafness will be shared as well as lyrics, poems and videos that I like. (2) Most of the entries are deleted as they were my thoughts of happiness, frustrations and sadness. They are regarded as my personal views. (3) The info on XTOMIC has been updated on my right panel. Do check it out! |
| Monday, December 31 ..... My First Time - Malacca ..... |
Arrived "home" after a long day's car ride to Malacca.. The most memorable moment was that we had our satay dinner at that famous restaurant. Even, highly recommended by MediaCorp and other TV stations. Today, I met Ee Lee, Jimmy, Steven, Ben, Jessica, Koo & Yip at Mid Valley. Had our lunch at LJS. We started our journey from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca. 2 hours' car ride... Steven's driving skills are quite dangerous, yet very fast! Upon reaching our destination, we met two families. Made friends with them and their sons & daughter... I'm impressed by the boy & girl, Yie & Yao because they can sign well.. Can communicate with their parents AND deaf people like us..! Yie is especially shy when he meets any stranger. Somehow, I managed to be their friend by playing with them. It was 6PM in the evening. We had our shopping at the supermarket and another "Chinatown" (so called Jocker Walk). Also, had Malacca's unique (coconut/durian) chendol over there. Had our SATAY dinner. That satay dinner was like a steamboat, however it has its own speciality. After that delicious dinner, we went back to KL in cars. Quite tiring! But I enjoyed the whole day today, rather than going to Sunway Lagoon on my own. |
| Sunday, December 30 ..... At LE & KP's Wedding (Negeri Sembilan) ..... |
Now, it's 2.28AM in the morning after I had a long relaxing bath. Had a long day & night... Guess, I'm facing another culture - wedding banquet process shown by Mr. Liong Eng (Malaysian) & Mrs. Kim Phuong (Vietnamese). The program line-up contained a quite lot of Deaf culture - games, song-signing, drama, karaoke and dancing, besides Yam-Seng, cake-cutting, short speeches and PPT presentation. The guests are mostly from Malaysia. However, that banquet was unique as some guests are from Singapore, Canada/US, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Japan, & Australia. So, it became like an international event. Also, I saw the Vietnamese wedding process on video clips shown to the people at the banquet... Got another shock from there: poor deaf accessibility at that scene where the couple exchanged their vows. The dishes are okay. It was because I was busy helping out, performing and relay-interpreting. Therefore, I was unable to enjoy the dinner throughout the night. But I enjoyed making friends and chatting with people. My first time drinking a whole glass of whisky... I was asked by one of Vietnamese ladies to drink it at just one gulp! My goodness... I felt a little tipsy! But after a while, I was fine. Hmmmm, I guess I have enjoyed the whole event very much! :) |
| Saturday, December 29 ..... KL - MY 4TH TIME! ..... |
Writing here at a friend's place in KL... This is my 4th time coming here.. But it's my first time stepping in KL ALONE! *winks* I admit that it's really brave of me, especially when I'm a lady. Okay, I'm here with two simple purposes: - To perform at a wedding banquet (29 Dec 2007). - To enjoy a short getaway stay. Nothing much happened since I arrived here in KL. I'm preparing for my first overseas work assignment. Only 2 days' practices. Hmm, it's my pleasure to practice and perform with a deaf guy who has his first time doing song-signing item, although he does not listen to much of music. He and I wish to do it again at 2009's Deaf Olympics event that is held in Taiwan and we eagerly look forward to it. Besides these practices, I had my good and bad times. My bad times was that my cramps/pains (same, old) are back as usual. Luckily, I managed to relieve them with my Panadol and little of my tolerance. Looks like I have to see a doctor fast soon as my appointment is near. I've decided to resume my medication, it's only a way. No side effects from that medication and I have no worries about my health. I only need to watch my diet and increase my exercise routines. I had my good times with Koon Wei, Loula, Lucy and others over simple meals. They are nice persons... I got free transportation and accommodation. I've got to do something to appreciate them... Hope this can be done before I go back to Singapore. After this assignment, I must do something adventurous to make sure that I must enjoy my stay here with a relaxed mind. God bless... |
| Wednesday, December 12 ..... I'M INSPIRED! ..... |
No time to blog these events dated on 7 Dec to 9 Dec. These events were organized by MSFD and MFD respectively; different dates. For me, I chose to attend the MSFD dinner, MFD conference and dinner. Unexpectedly, I was asked to put up song-signing performances at their dinner events. It was a well-received response from deaf audience and in the end, some countries like Malaysia, Taiwan, Greece, wish to invite me to their events in 2008 and 2009. Cool...! All thanks goes to Jane, David, Angie, Dennis and others who spread my name - Singapore Idol 2004. Not only that but I was inspired by most of the deaf people. Learnt a lot of things about International signs, audism, SL linguistics, so on... Hope to share these things with people around me. Me, greatly impressed by one of the guys from Taiwan. I was attracted to his gentlemanly manners. Guess I might have a short crush on him. But too bad, we had our very short time to get to know each other better. Nvm, I hope to see him online in MSN often. :) |
| Thursday, December 6 ..... "I" on Malaysia ..... |
Today is my third day. It's now raining. Me, surfing the net at Kota Raya Starbucks cafe.. Nothing much to do here, except for eating and sleeping. Will shop at Chinatown once it stops raining. This evening, I will get to meet up with my friends and chat again. Yesterday, I planned to go down to the EYE ON MALAYSIA. On my way there, I got lost. It was just that the (public) bus driver forgot to drop me there. But I enjoyed the ride, yet long (2-hour) one! I managed to get there but alas, it was raining. I got myself drenched, not too wet! There got a special fee for disabled. A thought came to my mind: That label may be insulting, however I'm still disabled. Deaf, yet special.. as long as I can enjoy this fee to experience the ride in that ferris wheel. Inside the Cabin 24, I felt cold. Round and round I went... only 4 rounds. It really helps relieve stress, especially when seeing Lake Titiwangsa and other buildings. After the ride, I stayed here for another 3 hours. What was I doing within those 3 hours? Walking around the lake in the rain... Taking some snapshots on things around the lake... It was 8PM. Caught a laser show. Beautiful...! Left for Chinatown. Met up with other friends from Malaysia, Italy and Thailand. My first time seeing them signing dirty jokes... Hope to learn something new from them, not those dirty jokes. DEAF picture in their heads. Meanwhile, I'm there to be INSPIRED again! |
| Wednesday, December 5 ..... Deaf Heart (DSEKL2007) ..... |
Writing here at the Wheelers Guest House (Backpackers' Hostel) in Kuala Lumpur... Left Singapore for KL last Monday. I'm here: - To have a good break (away from Singapore) - To play - To eat - To sleep - To get inspiration (for my music & dreams) - To learn (about Deaf issues - arts, sign language, culture & education) - To build network (for deaf arts development) Will be back to Singapore on 9 Dec. I got new work starting on 10 Dec and it will be at Raffles Place. Alright, let me share my experience here and today was my first day (although that was my 3rd time coming here to KL). Upon my arrival together with my friend, David, it was almost 4:35AM. We got a free night's stay in the end, and we slept till noon. Met Siti (sign name: C-T). Knew her slowly and she's a full-time interpreter in Penang. Interesting lady! David and I went down to Dewan Wawasan Convention & Exhibition Centre (DWC) to check its place out. By LRT (from Plaza Rakyat to Maluri). Checked where the conference is located. Even, swimming pool, dining bar. We hanged out at the Starbucks cafe because of me - just wanna check if I can use free WiFi access with my macbook. Different from Singapore! This does not need any logon to enjoy free WiFi. Till around 7PM, I joined David in meeting up with different deaf people. Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Australia, Kuwait, Malaysia, Thailand, Greece. Felt their heart and passion in deaf sports development... It made me relive my passion and I hope to get something out of it for deaf arts development. *fingers crossed* Tomorrow, I will be alone, exploring other areas in KL, like EYE. Also, I hope to enjoy something out there... I must forget loneliness! |
| Wednesday, November 14 ..... Video Uploads #2 ..... |
Thanks to Andre who has recorded and edited the videos again... My first and second performances in marimba... I admit I was quite nervous about my solo performances. Still inexperienced in performing although I did a plenty of song signing shows for 7 years. Hope I will continue to do more shows like this. This way, I will get more experiences so that I won't let my mistakes repeat. Also, I hope to overcome my shortcomings soon. In next Feb/Mar, I'm invited to perform and do exchange workshop in Cambodia. Hope I will have more songs by Jan 2008. |
| Tuesday, November 13 ..... Video Uploads #1 ..... |
Thanks to Andre who recorded and edited the videos... =) Alright, hope you will enjoy them! |
| Wednesday, November 7 ..... STAY ON! ..... |
After the chat with Jarn May, I had to think of my priorities. However, I will stick with my music plans. I must stay on, ON!! |
| ..... CSH Percussion Band Alumni ..... |
Today, I went down to Canossian School to help out... Hmm, the CSH Percussion Band Alumni is really wonderful. Like their passion for percussion music.. Xuehui and Shiyi were planning to play the duet. All of the sudden, I was so ON that I decided to help them out. Gonna get the nice duet - The Entertainer for them. Hope they can play it well. =) |
| Friday, October 19 ..... No Flash! ..... |
Couldn't sleep tonight. It was really another nightmare to me. Flashlights, flashlights... I hate them! I know I did quite badly in my first song performance: Radetsky March. I was greatly affected by poor lighting and flashlights from cameras. I hate flashlights, they really blinded me when I tried to read the score and play on correct bars. Bad memories flashed back in my mind. That was my first nightmare when I performed my solo song - Happy Mallets. Stage lighting was really strong, I couldn't see Mr. Teow conducting. I was blinded by those lighting. At that time, I needed him so that I could play together with the band. Somehow, I managed to have my faith in myself and finally, I came back to the correct bars to play with them. Now, flashlights are really dangerous. I guess, I must remember to inform the photographers not to take photos of me with flash when I perform mallet percussion. Well, I can say, it was another experience I gained from my performance. Lesson learnt! |
| Wednesday, October 17 ..... My BIG Day! ..... |
MY BIG DAY!! TIME: 4PM VENUE: TIGERLIVE, ST. JAMES POWER STATION One month ago, I've informed that I have been chosen as the first recipient to benefit from the VSA Talent Development Programme. A marimba is purchased to fulfil my dream of being a percussionist. VSA has established this Talent Development Programme through a generous donation from Asia Pacific Brewery (Tiger Beer). In this programme, we hope to provide assistance to talented people with disabilities so that they will be able to develop their talent to the fullest. The Presentation Ceremony has been scheduled tomorrow. During the ceremony, Ms Amy Cheng of Fly Entertainment will present a song item. I will also put up a short performance on the marimba and sign a song together with her friends. Quite nervous about it! Some of my juniors, friends and others are invited to witness this ceremony. They are there to support me. Truly grateful to them! Still, I will do my best I can! JIAYOU!! |

| Sunday, August 26 ..... Waiting on the World to Change (by D-PAN) ..... |
Me and all my friends We're all misunderstood They say we stand for nothing There's no way we ever could Now we see everything is going wrong With the world and those who lead it We just feel like we don't have the means To rise above and beat it So we keep waiting (waiting) Waiting on the world to change We keep on waiting (waiting) Waiting on the world to change Its hard to be persistant When we're standing at a distance So we keep waiting (waiting) Waiting on the world to change Now if we had the power To bring our neighbors home from war They would've never missed a Christmas No more ribbons on the door When you trust your television What you get is what you got Cuz when when they own the information ooohhh, They can bend it all they want So while we're waiting (waiting) Waiting on the world to change We keep on waiting (waiting) Waiting on the world to change It's not that we don't care We just know that the part ain't fair So we keep waiting (waiting) Waiting on the world to change We're still waiting (waiting) Waiting on the world to change We keep on waiting (waiting) Waiting on the world to change One day our generation Is gonna rule the population So we keep on waiting (waiting) Waiting on the world to change Know we keep on waiting (waiting) Waiting on the world to change We keep on waiting (waiting) Waiting on the world to change Waiting on the world to change Waiting on the world to change Waiting on the world to change - Sung by John Mayer |
| ..... Change a Heart, Change the World (by Jump5) ..... |
Every dreamer has dreamed of a perfect life I know the world has been trying for years to get it right We try and try, but find it impossible to do Don't you wish we could make this a better place Can't you see that we must live life a different way Every day, imagine what love could turn this to Wanna change the world, then change your mind We'll light the darkness one life at a time Chorus: When we change a heart We change the world A spark of light can turn into a fire bright as the sun If you change your heart today Then that could change a million tomorrows What started as a whisper will echo on and on When we change a heart We change the world A voice is waking a heart to the light of day A tiny flicker of hope can push the night away It's safe to say a caring heart brings another back Can you fathom a world where we open up Can you picture the day we've all been dreaming of Live and love like right now is all we really have Wanna change the world, then change your mind We'll find forever one day at a time Chorus: When we change a heart We change the world A spark of light can turn into a fire bright as the sun If you change your heart today Then that could change a million tomorrows What started as a whisper will echo on and on When we change a heart We change the world You may think it's crazy But that's alright with me It's gonna take some time to find the way But I believe... We can change the world... What started as a whisper it echos one day at a time. Chorus X2: When we change a heart We change the world A spark of light can turn into a fire bright as the sun If you change your heart today Then that could change a million tomorrows What started as a whisper will echo on and on When we change a heart We change the world - Sung by Jump 5 |
| Saturday, August 25 ..... Where'd You Go (by D-PAN) ..... |
Where'd you go? I miss you so Seems like it's been forever that you've been gone She said somedays I feel like shit Somedays I wanna quit and just be normal for a bit I don't understand why you have to always be gone I get along but your trips always feel so long And I find myself trying to stay by the phone 'Cause your voice always helps me to not feel so alone But I feel like an idiot, working my day around a call And when I pick up I don't have much to say, so I want you to know it's a little fucked up that I'm stuck here waiting, at times debatin Telling you that I've had it with you and your career Me and the rest of the family here singing Where'd you go? I miss you so Seems like it's been forever that you've been gone Where'd you go? I miss you so Seems like it's been forever that you've been gone Please come back home You know, the place where you used to live Used to barbeque with burgers and ribs Used to have a little party every halloween with candy by the pile But now, you only stop by every once in a while Shit I find myself just filling my time With anything to keep the thought of you from my mind I'm doing fine and I'm plannin' to keep it that way You can call me if you find that you have something to say And I'll tell you I want you to know its a little fucked up that I'm stuck here waiting, at times debating Telling you that I've had it with you and your career Me and the rest of the family here singing Where'd you go? I miss you so Seems like its been forever that you've been gone Where'd you go? I miss you so Seems like its been forever that you've been gone Please Come back home I want you to know its a little fucked up that I'm stuck here waiting, no longer debatin' Tired of sittin and hatin' and making these excuses For why you're not around, and feeling sorta useless It seems that one thing has been true all along You don't really know what you've got till it's gone I guess I've had it with you and your career When you come back I won't be here and you can sing it Where'd you go? I miss you so Seems like it's been forever that you've been gone Where'd you go? I miss you so Seems like it's been forever that you've been gone Please come back home Please come back home Please come back home Please come back home Please come back home - Sung by Fort Minor |
| ..... Mr. Holland's Opus ..... |
This movie has once inpired me when I was in Sec. 2. At that time, I was experiencing failure when I performed not very well at Singapore Conference Hall. It partly encouraged me to carry on with my music journey. =) Hmmm, I've been looking for this DVD movie since then. Unable to find it, preferrably with Code 1... It's still in my DVD list. |

Some time ago, I went with the Canossian School Percussion Band. That was my third time going overseas with them. My first time was to Thailand and the second time was to Italy. Out of three, I like Italy the most. The furthest country that I travelled. Miss those memories... Although it was a short 4D3N trip, I did enjoy the whole process. It has been my pleasure to prepare the children with their songs. Also, I'm glad to perform duet percussion with Hau En. Took alot of photos... Photo Album - Music Cultural Trip to HK ENJOY! |
| Sunday, March 11 ..... My Solo Break ..... |
Just now, I performed my solo items at the NUS University Cultural Centre. - Radetsky March in Marimba (Percussion) - Listen by Beyonce in Song-signing Guess that I did my very best! Therefore, my solo break has been achieved and I will continue to keep it up. So, I'm truly grateful to Mr. Christopher Yeow for being very patient with me, to XTOMIC for being supportive, to Canossian School for lending me the marimba with no conditions, to Garrick for being the "No. 1 Fan" (imitating Ella's acting style in Hana Kimi) and lastly, to Alex for guiding me during the two practices. :) |

| Wednesday, January 31 ..... Trace II | Mennono ..... |
Extracted from the brochure of M1 Singapore Fringe Festival'07 - ART and DISABILITY 310.01.07 to 11.02.07 Trace II | Mennono by Compagnie Pál Frenák (France | Hungary) 10 February 2007 - 11 February 2007, 8PM 90 minutes with a 15-minute interval Esplanade Theatre Studio $28 (Standard) | $18 (Concession) www.ciefrenak.org Trace II represents four separate but not entirely unconnected conditions of the human self in search of its identity. Mennono sees us diving into a mysterious, blue universe, with movements inspired by the art of Butoh. The gestures unfold in an almost imperceptible way, fusing movement, architecture and sign language of the deaf and dumb. Through the endeavour to grapple with and escape from binds that confine the body, the works demonstrate how energy and adrenalin allow for the liberation of the soul. "Pál Frenák knows how to capture the attention of his audience, creating a sometimes strange, emotional and captivating environment - surrounded by magnificent dancers - in every sence of the word." - Le Figaro ----------------------------- Attracted to this, I decided to buy a concession ticket, with a help of my cousin. Thanks, Vivian! I hope to watch this show on 10 February 2007, Saturday and at the same time, I can learn something new...And now, I'm sharing this with you since most of my readers know sign language and appreciate performing arts. Hope to see some of you around on that day. =) |
| Tuesday, January 30 ..... Survivor Singapore II ..... |
Today, I had the full-dress run. Quite tiring.. For now, my role for this show is to interpret every character. It's a challenge for me... Initially, I was to sign songs only since I'm very experienced at it. I came to know my role clearly after attending the rehearsal for my first time last Saturday. The songs were removed. I was panicked about it, so I decided to hire an interpreter to help me with this interpreting. How can it be done? On stage, I follow the signing most of the times. And, I will try to sign in deaf language if I can. At the same time, the interpreter will interpret the show for me. Sounds like it's redundant. No choice since I'm paid to sign the show. I guess I can make use of this best situation since it has been arranged and published. I'm trying my best... Two-ways interpreting is something new to me. I haven't done it before. Again, I do not have any proper trainings or experiences. With some advices from my friend and my knowledge, I hope to do my best... Also, I hope to do a right thing here... Alright, let me share my experiences about two run-through rehearsals that I attended just now. In the afternoon, without any help from the interpreter, I can be able to follow the show, provided with the script. There got two scenes which Kumar acted in. They are very difficult to follow since Kumar added in more words or he changed his own parts. Another one which Karen acted in, she spoke quite fast! I couldn't catch up with her. There got another scene that depicts a talk-show involving six characters. Oh my gosh! Me alone, signing all of their parts. To overcome these difficulties, I can only summarize the scene. Later in the evening, my friend Alex came in to help me. He's my saviour!! Hahaaa... To appreciate his efforts in helping, I treated him to a dinner. Alright, he's a newbie in this interpreting area and at least, he can learn and improve his signing and interpreting skills. Meanwhile, I have learnt some new things and for now, I can only memorize most of the script as much as I can. Also, I will practise my signing and expressive skills. Okay, I hope to do a better job on this coming Wednesday and Thursday. May God bless me... |

| Monday, December 4 ..... Follow My Heart ..... |
Sorry, I haven't updated my blog for some time. I have been busy with my personal things and I'm still settling them down. Since then, I had been bottling my problems down inside of me. Going, going and gone through some transitions. Although I've left the XTOMIC some time ago, I couldn't stop myself from doing more shows by song-signing and percussion. I don't deny that I love performing. Why must I stop this passion because of XTOMIC only? I can do it on my own (solo). So, I decided to follow my heart - performing percussion and song-signing. Along the way, I hope to get some inspirations to create a deaf arts evolution in Singapore. Even though I'm no longer in XTOMIC, many people still see me as the founder of XTOMIC. When doing solo shows, they thought that I'm still representing XTOMIC and SADeaf. This led me to face one of my problems - identifying myself in performing arts scene. Therefore, I decided to leave XTOMIC completely by removing myself from the XTOMIC mailing list. *My apologies for not telling you, Hina! You're a good leader to XTOMIC, I can tell you. You're still learning to lead people. Well-done job and continue to keep it up! One day, you will have great achievements in your life.* Also, I'm facing another problem - lack of a reflective signer or helper. I had no choice but I had to turn to XTOMIC for help. Now, I cannot depend on it anymore, otherwise everyone will think that I'm still with XTOMIC. And it's a time for me to look for a person who can help and support me all the way and train him/her. At the same time, I hope to represent myself, not XTOMIC! This way, I will know who, what and where I am. Right now, I do not feel any sense of belonging with XTOMIC. I do not know myself who I am in the eyes of XTOMIC. I'm told that I'm still seen as "the founder" even though I no longer am in XTOMIC. In my heart, I really hope to be a good friend to everyone in XTOMIC. I wish to be "Lily Goh" who has a cheerful, cranky personality. Well, it's already over. What's done cannot be undone... :( Here, I'm following my heart - to put all my efforts and hardwork into my BIG DREAM to be an international performer. |
| Saturday, November 11 ..... My Profile (by Amber) ..... |
"Doompt, Cha, Doompt, Doompt, Cha" As you attempt to silent read these onomatopoeic words, or even attempting to pronounce them, can you feel a rhythm in you? For Lily Goh, tuning into the vibrations produced by sounds has been the bridge that connects her to music. Deaf since the age of two, music has been her means of communication in a world that is silent. Lily became a public figure when she participated in the first Singapore Idol contest a couple of years ago. Veteran judges of the Idol Contest have been well-known for their sharp tongue and hyperbolic comments. When it comes to Lily however, the audience will find it forgivable should these witty judges be at a loss for words. In the eyes of many Singaporeans, the courage exhibited by Lily is admirable. The Idol contest has seen many aspiring singers birth to fame, but to welcome a contestant who has lost her sense of hearing is unheard of. Spurred by her passion for music however, Lily decided to join the Singapore Idol despite her hearing impairment. She shared that the experience was "a great eye-opener. It has widened my horizons and I now know that I can make opportunities for my dreams." Even though Lily did not win the contest, she has made a statement in the hearing impaired community. When asked about the thoughts that went through her mind when she was first asked to perform on national television, she expressed her desire "to inspire people, telling them never to limit themselves by their handicaps." Beyond all the glitz and glamour, Lily continues to pursue music in her everyday life. She teaches percussion to the hearing impaired children at the Canossian School. Imparting her skills in music to these children is like going back to her roots. Lily was chosen to be in the school percussion band when she was ten. From there, her passion and love for music grew. She tasted her first fruits in music when she made her first solo public appearance at the Singapore Conference Hall in 1995. Lily vividly remembers, "I played 'Happy Mallets.' When it ended, I was showered with bouquets of roses and the audience clapped loudly. It was the most memorable one that I ever had." All of these may sound impressive, but not many can understand the struggles behind the scenes. In a candid manner, Lily shares about the challenges that she face. "With my present job as a band instructor, I have a lot of shortcomings. My scope is quite limited due to my lack of knowledge in music. Now, I mostly arrange scores for easy-playing so that deaf children will be able to enjoy it and at the same time, they will understand the fundamentals better." Challenges are not only found in her work place. Lily expresses loneliness at times "Perhaps my deafness separates me from the people around me. None of my deaf friends of my age range shares similar interests (music) as me." She shares that often, when she invites her hearing impaired friends for a music performance or workshop, none of them are interested. The silence in Lily's world seemed to have amplified following the loss of her dad last year. But Lily is glad to receive the support from her family of fellow music enthusiasts. XTOMIC is a volunteer group specializing in performing arts. Lily founded XTOMIC in year 2002. The XTOMIC has made itself heard in "A Nation in Concert" at the Esplanade last month. September was also an eventful month for XTOMIC as they have also staged overseas performances in Kuala Lumpur and Penang. It is heartwarming to learn about the XTOMIC and their overseas debut. Back in Singapore however, the pragmatic local scene requires some cultural fine-tuning. Lily describes the development of performing arts in Singapore as "limited." She disappointedly adds that it is "hard to pursue music here, and I am still struggling." Despite her tough and lonely journey in pursuing her dreams to study music and perform internationally, Lily continues to hold them close to her heart. She believes that she has learned to overcome problems in life during the process. In her usual spirited self, Lily encourages the public to "never give up. Make opportunities and they will continue to knock on your door. If you keep on waiting, nothing will happen. No risk, no gain." It is in times like this that Lily's tenacious spirit shines. Like gold that has been through the refining fire, Lily's undaunted spirit presses on. Despite facing setbacks in her audition with a couple of local arts and music school, Lily aims to explore overseas. Perhaps her background served as the refining fire that has crafted a piece of refined gold over the past 27 years. But it has yet to be transformed into a jewel. Lily continues to search for her market and career path as she turns into a full time performer next year. Unlike an over-night star with a one-hit wonder, Lily continues to resonate in the hearts of Singaporeans as a brave girl. She may not know the cause of her deafness, but she certainly knows what she wants to achieve ahead of her. For now, this gem continues to sparkle in the lives of those around her. Lily will be teaching 3 hearing impaired boys till the end of this year. And so, she returns to the "doompt, cha, doompt doompt, cha," in the four walls of a centre for children with special needs. Lily will then venture fully into professional performing arts and beyond the shores next year. "Doompt, cha, doompt doompt, cha..." Even for those of us who are not too musically inclined, you probably would have felt the beat behind these words. If you haven't, then be prepared to be all ears to Singapore's Miss Beethoven, as she increases her volume and shout out to the world of music which knows no boundaries. |

HOORAY! I PASSED!! I've achieved my goal in getting ABRSM Grade 5 in Concert Percussion! Now, I'm taking another step: ABRSM Grade 6 in Concert Percussion in March 2007. I've got to work harder to get money to pay for its exam and lesson fees. Hope this problem will be over soon. I must tide over it! |
| Wednesday, October 11 ..... My Real Me? ..... |
Yesterday, I went down to LASALLE-SIA for a discussion meeting. My needs were discussed: note-taker, aural/ear training and performing with students. I will face alot of problems with transcription that will be mostly used throughout music courses. This means I've to write melody while listening to it. I was informed that I need to go for an audition again and it will be in March 2007. If there is any improvement on my aural skills, they will consider taking me in. And, I'm informed that a music course in World Music will be removed from their system soon. Now, I look at other course options at LASALLE-SIA: BA (Hons) Jazz, Popular Music, Classical Music or World Music This programme focuses on a range of current music practices from "East and West", including improvisation and notation, and broad stylistic awareness, reflects a changed musical environment that values diversity in the skills of its composers and performers. The programme reflects Singapore's unique situation - placed geographically in the heart of Asia, demographically with a diverse multicultural population and with a long history as an international meeting-point of cultures. It presents students with a unique opportunity to experience a broad cross-section of today's musical practice in a single integrated structure. Blending vibrant cultures and diverse concepts found in Asia with a western music discourse, students in the programme undertake a focused study in one of four pathways - Jazz, Popular Music, Classical Music or World Music. The curriculum allows for a significant degree of flexibility for students to integrate issues and topics across the four specialisations. The programme has a regional artistic focus in each of its pathways with an emphasis in the areas of cross-cultural, cross-art form and cross-genre collaboration preparing graduates for broader professional situations in the creative industries in Asia and elsewhere. BA (Hons) Music Technology Music Technology is an exciting field that has led graduates to various career paths. Designed for students who want to work in the music and media industries internationally, the programme modules include two categories - the teaching of technical skills and the development of creative applications for those skills. You will learn the technical skills of sound recording, mixing, audio post-production and sound design for live productions and multimedia projects equipping you to work in the recording and broadcasting industries in careers including sound engineering and sound editing. Musical skills are also developed through training in music theory, composition, aural dictation, improvisation and sight reading, providing you with the capabilities to work on professional music productions. BA (Hons) Theatre Arts This programme engages with contemporary intercultural theatre practices and development, contributing to the study of contemporary theatre arts, their diversity and modes of interaction. The international dimension of the programme helps in developing a programme that is outward looking and responsive to contemporary needs. The programme is aimed at students who wish to develop a broad-based understanding of contemporary theatre practice and explore the particular opportunities provided by its location in a multi-cultural environment. It is determinedly rooted in practice and concerned with developing the students' ability to research and understand contemporary theatre in the context of the pressures of independent study. Students are expected to undertake independent work combining practical and theoretical research and are required to develop sophisticated approaches to theatre practice. What if my application to music studies is rejected again? *pondering* Perhaps, I will try to apply for other courses in Musical Theatre and Theatre Arts at the same time. Will make enjuries about their requirements soon. Next year, when doing my full-time freelance arts education/performing work, I'll be more into song-signing, poetry, story-telling, percussion and acting. So, what area shall these relate to? Deaf arts? Whenever I watch percussion concerts, trainings or workshops, I somehow feel loneliness. This has been with me since I was ten years old. Perhaps, my deafness separates me from hearing people around me. There are none of my deaf friends (around my age) who shares similar interests as me. Often, I ask my deaf & hearing friends out for these kinda of activities, they may not be interested. In the end, I'm doing things alone. However, there is a Percussion Band at Canossian School. I'm very happy to work there to teach percussion music every Saturday. I love that feeling! But somehow, sign language binds me to the people around me. It's a nice feeling that I ever have... This also applies to song-signing that binds music and sign language together and form another style of performing arts. So, I conclude that I like to work with deaf people. But now, what's my real me when it comes to performing? |

Our dear friend, Alvan said: "It's terribly difficult to build a forum community but let's all of us give it a try." So, he emailed the link to us - Deafinitely Boleh! And, I've put it under my right column and it's at "Souls of Heaven". This is a deaf forum where people can contribute opinions and so on on hot issues of the day. In fact, there is one issue raging on now, about CIs and whether young kids should be implanted. Do check this link out... |
