My Resolutions for Year 2012

No one asked me about my resolutions for this year. Now, I came to think about them... Actually, I do not know what I want for myself. Perhaps, I may be in delusion. Or I may be in cowardice.

MUSIC

Now, I decided to give up on my music. I have suspected that I may have tinnitus. I am unable to concentrate on maintaining my techniques and performing solo. Till now, I have not seen any doctor about it. I keep on delaying it by keeping myself busy with ExtraOrdinary Horizons.

I was thinking of passing on my baton to the younger generation... Hau En has her undying passion in percussion. I hope to see her perform more than I did last time. She can perform better. Also, she can lead Youth Deaf Generation - the only deaf percussion band in Singapore. I am ready to support her as I can.

EXTRAORDINARY HORIZONS

For one whole year of 2011, I had been working very extremely hard to build this social enterprise for deaf. Along the way, I struggled. Yes, I did confide in my close friend and two good friends. I was like a mad woman, as what they felt. I admit it... Anyway, I am glad to know that a few deaf youths had been patient and understanding with me. I hope this EO Horizons can give them different experiences that they have not come across before. Also, they can grow up with EO Horizons for a few more years, I hope. If they need to go to another place they feel it is better, I only wish them all the best in whatever they do.

FOR MYSELF

As what I said earlier, I agree with myself that I am a selfish person. Sometimes, a weird person too! Sometimes, I do not understand my own heart. If you see me as a strong person, I do not agree with you. I am still a fragile person, in my mind and soul.

What future can I hold for myself? I will say... ExtraOrdinary Horizons. It is a shared place where dreams can be achieved.

Now, I hope small things can be achieved slowly at our paces. JIAYOU!

Passion in teaching

Many think I am passionate about music. So DID I...

But I am wrong. Actually, it turned out to be teaching.

Well, I have a musical background. Yes, I admit it. But it is partly led by my search for identity in deafness. Not strong...

During my journey, I discovered more and more about myself and people associated with me.

Deafness contributes to many issues: identity, education, sign language, arts, culture, politics, pride, ego, communication, accessibility, so on...

Due to the global economic downturn in 2001, I was unable to find any full-time job, related to my IT diploma that I obtained in the same year when I graduated. I do not blame this crisis. Thanks to it, another passion in teaching was created.

This did help me a lot. It has filled my gap where I am unable to communicate with my family. Though I am able to speak with the use of NAO mode, I can't. Most of my family members are comfortable with Mandarin.

This led to my loneliness. Having the passion in teaching helps forget pains of loneliness. I enjoy the process of exploring, learning, educating and sharing.

Grateful to SADEAF and deaf seniors for giving me this passion... I really love teaching. Now I miss it since my first teaching assignment.

I have been marketing ExtraOrdinary Horizons. Not many know it as it's a start-up social enterprise established this year.
It has not taken off successfully yet. It is still at its early stages - building its profile and portfolio.

I hope to get more teaching assignments next year and at the same time, more assignments can be created for deaf peers to earn extra incomes.

While having the full-time job, running the social enterprise is not an easy task. Very challenging... With that passion, I still hold on to the faith, especially when I do things on my own.

It takes a lot of blood, sweat and tears to keep it going on. I am not the only one and there are many who haven't given up on themselves. They can see light in their darkness. Yes, keep our fingers crossed all the way! That's HOPE!!

I hope to continue this teaching passion in this avenue - ExtraOrdinary Horizons.

Too Loud!

Realized that I "became" being unable to control my volume of voice. That was just now. I noticed from my friend's facial expression when I talked to her.

She gave me another insecure feeling as her signing fluency dropped and she didn't practice much on her signing skills. I tended to use voice, instead of signing. I do not know why it is so. I am more comfortable to use sign language rather than voice. I miss deaf culture...

From there, I came to know there will be more challenges for me to overcome later. This will be my continuation of learning. Also, part of my deafness...

This music brings me to those memories whether happy, sad or painful they are. Flowing in my head... My heart aches when I think of them. I did smile... I did cry...

Along this journey, I know I do not regret anything that I made and they are my choices. This has taught me many lessons. Only I can move on...ahead with my head held high.

I know I have lost many chances and I may not treasure them well. But this is alright. That's life. Again, I did tell myself that I do not regret them.

Sometimes, there is a time for me to take a step and set my foot in it. Once rooted to it, there will come with a fiery, deep passion. It comes and goes, like love. One day, this will let it go... It will come back to me again. It's like a hoop that is connected in hearts which believe each other. They do miss each other.

That's what we live for. With a small hope...

Tomorrow may be the ending. However, there may be another start that I look forward. Still, marching onwards. On own...

My Balance...

...of Life and Work. Since then, I have been going less often with friends. Most of my time is spent on EOH - work is never-ending.

EOH gives me many goals... But I set myself on one life-time goal and it is to bring me happiness, love and devotion. =)

Alright, besides EOH work, I just started my exercise routine. Jog twice-thrice a week. Hopefully I can start my swim soon. I cannot swim too often because of EOH work. I can only exercise at around midnight. Hmmm, I hope to lose some weights and I believe I can! =)

I put all my hopes into EOH and it will become my dream & passion.

Our Y D-GEN under the wings of YMCA & ExtraOrdinary Horizons is now looking for people. No limitations on the number.

We have many roles to fill in:

3) Actors/Actresses
4) Supporting Actors/Actresses
5) Supporters/Fans

Whatever roles there are, our Y D-GEN is glad to share our passion in our Deaf musical-theatrical style of song-signing, acting/pantomime and percussion.

We are not professional ones, we have ideas to explore, experiment and experience together. Come, join this learning journey towards developing deaf arts scene in Singapore.

Why we choose Percussion? In Singapore, Canossian School Percussion Band was formed in 1989 and it creates many deaf musicians from time to time. But due to lack of guidance, we keep losing them to Singaporean culture where they put their studies & career in their highest priorities. Till now, there are two determined, committed deaf persons playing & practicing percussion. We hope to have more guidance and support from another world of hearing musicians and we can excel ourselves to better heights.
Song-signing incorporates invented & improvised signs and simplified body movements, while being the beautiful blend of song and sign language. Extremely popular among hearing. One special thing about the Y D-GEN is that I am the only capable person of sharing the Deaf art of song signing.
Acting/pantomime is common among practicing actors/actresses. BUT in deaf way, it is something different as it uses Visual-Gestural Communication mainly for dialogues in pantomime acts. Inspired by the HI! Theatre - the only Deaf theatre in Singapore, we hope to adopt their style into ours and it will become another D-MUSICAL THEATRE, including song-signing & percussion music. But sadly, the HI! Theatre was closed down in 2008 because of Singaporean culture again - many talented actors & actresses have their family commitments.

Now, we set our target audience as our Deaf Community as well as the hearing societies. We have ever received many feedbacks and critics on our gigs. But this doesn't stop us from continuing to develop deaf arts here.

Is there any requirement to join this team? Signing background? Musical background?

There is no requirement met. But we need your time, not commitment. Simply, you must have an interest in Deafness and open-mindedness to learn together.

OLD-SCHOOL TIME!!

XTOMIC-ers... We had our great time practicing and performing together from 2002 to 2008!! We created many, many song gigs - Larger Than Life, At The Beginning, Almost Here, Colours of the Wind, Because You Loved Me, Beautiful...

Let you know that most of them will be back again. But they will have improvised style and choreography at another levels!

Again, I will be directing and leading this group, together with Hau En this time. In the meantime, the gigs will be either paid or voluntary upon discussion and agreement between ExtraOrdinary Horizons and other agencies/event coordinations.

Period, Period

Work is never-ending... Now, this period is busy. The EOH team is busy preparing for its curriculum that consists of several phases.

My highest priority is ExtraOrdinary Horizons. I will be the EOH and EOH will be us - "land of dreams by deaf". Busy with editing videos, revising work... At the same time, I need some motivation because I'm on my own most of the times. Good thing, the team is in cooperation.

This time seems GE Election season... GE Fever! Alvan Yap shared his thoughts/views with us through emails and I really appreciated his efforts.

Some of you may not be his readers. He is one of our Deaf Voices in Singapore, and his area focus is deaf human rights and deaf education. You can see, a few of us have been working hard to emerge as representing the voices of Deaf communities in Singapore. In the same time, we have been protecting our culture and sign language that may be extinct one day. However, deafness still runs in our blood! =)

Alright, I may not update this blog regularly. Gonna be busy with EOH projects... Now, I got fever. On and off... Didn't see the doctor, but I'm on panadol-medication in order to control my work entitlements of 7 days' medical leave. I got to step up on my work progress...! Give me strength... *praying*

Looking for people who are keen in song-signing (to work with me)

I decided to have a few people to work on a few items with me this year. These items will incorporate deaf elements and showcase on deafness in its every way like song-signing and story-telling.

Now, I post this request - to look for committed people who are interested to work with me for a few months...

The performances will be in late year - August to December 2011.

Simple Requirements:

Committed to every practices (Wednesdays evening or Saturdays afternoon/evening)
Keen interest in sign language and deaf culture & community

Must have knowledge in sign language? No, you can learn along your journey with us. Whether you have stage fright/camera-shyness or not, you need to have an open mind to support this deaf movement.

Additional info: Deaf are welcome. Hearing, too...
The practices will commence in mid-May. No limitations to the number of people who are ready to commit to most of the practices.

A long time that I had never performed with the group since 2009. My last gig was with MW & CK. Power of the Dream by Celine Dion.

I am glad to share my experiences with those performers. But I am no good at choreography. I'd rather advise and improvise on signs as I can feel & see better expressions & interpretations. The choreography shall be decided by people.

A Brand New Start

It's my pleasure to share this newly set-up business with my readers here. Before I start here about it, I wish to inform you that I no longer work with the Singapore Association for the Deaf as a registered sign language instructor. Also, my contract as the Artistic Coordinator expired in December 2010. Some of you may know that I had my very tough period since late 2009. You were there for me when I was down. Now, I want to tell you that I am feeling better. Sincerely grateful for your support and what you believe in me.

Now, this is another brand new start for me. This ExtraOrdinary Horizons business started recently. Its first event was taken place at SMU and it was led and taught by my hearing friend. I helped him out voluntarily, together with my two deaf peers and one hearing friend. After seeing how it worked, I came to my difficult decision that I resigned from SADeaf - Deaf Access Services. I realized that it may be a place where I can achieve most of my dreams.

The EO Horizons' officiation will be in February. Registered under my solely name with ACRA. I am ready to bear every responsibility for any case that happens.

15 January is postponed to Feb due to the CNY pre-celebrations. And for 21 January’s event, it is still on. They chose to take me out because of the change in the program. signAstory shall continue supporting this event by performing 2 songs.

New Year's Heartlands CLAP

Last Saturday, I was there at Toa Payoh HDB Hub with the group signAstory, doing deaf awareness program - song-signing performances and free lesson on ABC & common greetings (Happy New Year & I Love You).

Now, the next is at Bukit Merah Central Amphitheatre. Free lesson will be included. I hope to have another new song for this coming performance.

Danzation 2011

This Danzation 2011 aims to inspire the world through music and dance. One of the groups is Redeafination and it will be performing at this dance concert production on 7th and 8th January. It is RDF's first major collaboration where the entire 2-hour production will be made fully accessible to Deaf audiences.

I had taught sign language to several students of NRA some time ago. Enjoyable to teach them at another level... Anyway, I will be excited to look forward to this event.

Loving Heart Multi Service Centre is a joint project by the South West Community Development Council, PAP Community Foundation (Yuhua Branch) with two voluntary welfare organisations, Cheng Hong Welfare Services Society and Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society. LHMSC is part-funded by South West CDC and is supported by the Ministry of Community Development and Sports.

Uploaded to YouTube just now to remember my first & last performances with Dino showed in 2008. It was at our deaf friends' wedding banquet in KL.

Dino and I had our long, tiring practices for two days. That's really our HARD WORK!
Let you know that both of us are deaf. It was our challenge to perform together without any cue/help. But in fact, I gave him cues most of the times during the duet performance. For example, hand-holding, head-nodding.

After all, everyone (in the hall) and Dino & I had our great fun together. They enjoyed our performances very much. Now, I hope you will like it after watching it.

DPA Fundraising Football Match & Dinner

The Disabled People's Association (DPA), in collaboration with the Celebrities Sport Club and International Football Presenters is organizing a football match to honour the 2010 International Day of People with Disabilities (IDPD) and raise funds for the advocacy work for the DPA. The IDPD is commemorated yearly in over 100 countries. It is a day to reflect on the challenges faced by people with disabilities whilst they pursue their goals and to celebrate their triumphs.

On the 27th November 2010, the 'East' will challenge the 'West' to a friendly, but competitive game of football. The match will be held at Jalan Besar Stadium where some 3000 people are expected to attend and cheer on the two celebrity teams, including many media personalities and corporate leaders.

The evening will host performances by people with disabilities.
My solo performance is one of their night dinner program at La Villa Italian Grill & Bar and it is tentatively scheduled at 9pm.

I will be performing alone. Two songs are yet to be decided. Will update this blog again when the date is near.

As a part of the Citibank-YMCA Youth for Causes programme, this school raises at least $4,000 for the Singapore Association for the Deaf from the ticket sales itself.

One of its fund-raising events is to hold the Deaf Note concert in the second aim to showcase the wide range of talents through ways including but not limited to musical & dance performances.

I know I am invited to perform two songs in sign language to kick off the start of the concert. As heard earlier, the Signifique may be performing too.

Will perform the same old songs - Listen & Beautiful. This may fit the theme of the concert well. May this event goes with its smooth success. Jiayou!

Hmmm, I can say, I have done my best although I know I made a few mistakes in my song Alla Turca. Supposedly, it should be perfect by now as I first practiced and performed it in June 2007. From my teacher who attended the concert last Saturday, he advised me to work hard on my semi-quavers. More balanced and equal... I will remember it. Thanks, Mr Damien and I appreciate it.

Before the concert started, I was quite stressed. I made a lot of mistakes during the full-dress rehearsal and sound check. :(
Even worse, the string in my marimba snapped off twice when it was being tightened to avoid a funny "tack" sound when I hit that higher C-sharp note. :(

A few minutes before the door started to open for audience to enter, almost every problem is solved. Whew! I prayed hard that I must give it a best shot when performing that song. I did! :)

Alright, now, I have given this a few thoughts. I got to look for another solo piece and looks like I got to find help from people in music expertise - Mr Damien, Angeline or Mr Jonathan Fox. If not, I will look around and I will ask people who love music. Hope I can help enough help.

Also, I hope to get to hear something from Azariah and I hope to perform a duet with him one day. :)

SPOTLIGHT: Back Home from Phnom Penh

Finally, home sweet home...

Nice to be back home. Well, I can say, the stay at Phnom Penh was quite enjoyable because I made many new friends with deaf youths from Vietnam, Japan and Cambodia. Not only them, but I met many persons from different countries like Belgium, Mexico, Australia. They work in Cambodia to help develop arts in disabled community. Cool, right?

Things at Phnom Penh are really backward. Not much for my shopping experience. I bought nice gifts for my family and good friends only and I hope that they like them.
There got interesting culture and history, although it's a small town.

Oh yes, before I go off, I can say, the festival was really great. I was informed that this such festival will be organized again next year, but the place where the arts festival can be celebrated is yet to be announced. Anyway, I'm looking forward to it. =)

Guess it was my first solo performance in the year of 2008. I performed these 2 same solo songs in the heartland area - Fajar Shopping Centre. Quite far for me, however it was alright. Again, I was alone. Quite sianz...

These 2 songs may be common to you. I can't help signing them because I'm very familiar and I can do without any help. I was unable to find anyone who can help me with music cues or reflecting in sign language.

Hmmm, it's a time for me to make a little change. Will add more songs to my list. Hope I can achieve this simple goal. Not only this, but I also need help from someone who has more time...

My first and second performances in marimba... I admit I was quite nervous about my solo performances. Still inexperienced in performing although I did a plenty of song signing shows for 7 years. Hope I will continue to do more shows like this. This way, I will get more experiences so that I won't let my mistakes repeat. Also, I hope to overcome my shortcomings soon.

In next Feb/Mar, I'm invited to perform and do exchange workshop in Cambodia. Hope I will have more songs by Jan 2008.

Today, I went down to Canossian School to help out...

Hmm, the CSH Percussion Band Alumni is really wonderful. Like their passion for percussion music.. Xuehui and Shiyi were planning to play the duet. All of the sudden, I was so ON that I decided to help them out. Gonna get the nice duet - The Entertainer for them. Hope they can play it well. =)

Couldn't sleep tonight. It was really another nightmare to me. Flashlights, flashlights... I hate them!

I know I did quite badly in my first song performance: Radetsky March. I was greatly affected by poor lighting and flashlights from cameras. I hate flashlights, they really blinded me when I tried to read the score and play on correct bars.

Bad memories flashed back in my mind. That was my first nightmare when I performed my solo song - Happy Mallets. Stage lighting was really strong, I couldn't see Mr. Teow conducting. I was blinded by those lighting. At that time, I needed him so that I could play together with the band. Somehow, I managed to have my faith in myself and finally, I came back to the correct bars to play with them.

Now, flashlights are really dangerous. I guess, I must remember to inform the photographers not to take photos of me with flash when I perform mallet percussion.

Well, I can say, it was another experience I gained from my performance. Lesson learnt!

One month ago, I've informed that I have been chosen as the first recipient to benefit from the VSA Talent Development Programme. A marimba is purchased to fulfil my dream of being a percussionist.

VSA has established this Talent Development Programme through a generous donation from Asia Pacific Brewery (Tiger Beer). In this programme, we hope to provide assistance to talented people with disabilities so that they will be able to develop their talent to the fullest.

The Presentation Ceremony has been scheduled tomorrow.
During the ceremony, Ms Amy Cheng of Fly Entertainment will present a song item. I will also put up a short performance on the marimba and sign a song together with her friends. Quite nervous about it!

Some of my juniors, friends and others are invited to witness this ceremony. They are there to support me. Truly grateful to them!
Still, I will do my best I can!

Delighted tonight...!

My percussion instructor, Mr. Damien sent me a sms when I was on my way home from SADeaf. He told me that I passed my ABRSM Grade 6 exams (Percussion) with MERT.

Me surprised! This's my first time passing with MERIT!!

Now, I'm taking my ABRSM Grade 8 exams in Percussion. And, I've made up my mind to skip Grade 7 since I wanna save money and I have confidence to pass the Grade 8. Guess, I have to work hard for it..

Music Cultural Exchange

Some time ago, I went with the Canossian School Percussion Band. That was my third time going overseas with them. My first time was to Thailand and the second time was to Italy.
Out of three, I like Italy the most. The furthest country that I travelled. Miss those memories...

Although it was a short 4D3N trip, I did enjoy the whole process. It has been my pleasure to prepare the children with their songs. Also, I'm glad to perform duet percussion with Hau En.

My Solo Break

Just now, I performed my solo items at the NUS University Cultural Centre.

Guess that I did my very best! Therefore, my solo break has been achieved and I will continue to keep it up.

So, I'm truly grateful to Mr. Christopher Yeow for being very patient with me, to XTOMIC for being supportive, to Canossian School for lending me the marimba with no conditions, to Garrick for being the "No. 1 Fan" (imitating Ella's acting style in Hana Kimi) and lastly, to Alex for guiding me during the two practices. :)

Follow My Heart

Sorry, I haven't updated my blog for some time. I have been busy with my personal things and I'm still settling them down.

Since then, I had been bottling my problems down inside of me. Going, going and gone through some transitions. Although I've left the XTOMIC some time ago, I couldn't stop myself from doing more shows by song-signing and percussion. I don't deny that I love performing. Why must I stop this passion because of XTOMIC only?

I can do it on my own (solo).

So, I decided to follow my heart - performing percussion and song-signing. Along the way, I hope to get some inspirations to create a deaf arts evolution in Singapore.

Even though I'm no longer in XTOMIC, many people still see me as the founder of XTOMIC. When doing solo shows, they thought that I'm still representing XTOMIC and SADeaf. This led me to face one of my problems - identifying myself in performing arts scene.
Therefore, I decided to leave XTOMIC completely by removing myself from the XTOMIC mailing list. *My apologies for not telling you, Hina! You're a good leader to XTOMIC, I can tell you. You're still learning to lead people. Well-done job and continue to keep it up! One day, you will have great achievements in your life.*

Also, I'm facing another problem - lack of a reflective signer or helper. I had no choice but I had to turn to XTOMIC for help. Now, I cannot depend on it anymore, otherwise everyone will think that I'm still with XTOMIC. And it's a time for me to look for a person who can help and support me all the way and train him/her.
At the same time, I hope to represent myself, not XTOMIC! This way, I will know who, what and where I am.

Right now, I do not feel any sense of belonging with XTOMIC. I do not know myself who I am in the eyes of XTOMIC. I'm told that I'm still seen as "the founder" even though I no longer am in XTOMIC. In my heart, I really hope to be a good friend to everyone in XTOMIC. I wish to be "Lily Goh" who has a cheerful, cranky personality. Well, it's already over. What's done cannot be undone... :(

Here, I'm following my heart - to put all my efforts and hardwork into my BIG DREAM to be an international performer.

"Doompt, Cha, Doompt, Doompt, Cha" As you attempt to silent read these onomatopoeic words, or even attempting to pronounce them, can you feel a rhythm in you?

For Lily Goh, tuning into the vibrations produced by sounds has been the bridge that connects her to music. Deaf since the age of two, music has been her means of communication in a world that is silent.

Lily became a public figure when she participated in the first Singapore Idol contest a couple of years ago. Veteran judges of the Idol Contest have been well-known for their sharp tongue and hyperbolic comments. When it comes to Lily however, the audience will find it forgivable should these witty judges be at a loss for words.

In the eyes of many Singaporeans, the courage exhibited by Lily is admirable. The Idol contest has seen many aspiring singers birth to fame, but to welcome a contestant who has lost her sense of hearing is unheard of.

Spurred by her passion for music however, Lily decided to join the Singapore Idol despite her hearing impairment. She shared that the experience was "a great eye-opener. It has widened my horizons and I now know that I can make opportunities for my dreams."

Even though Lily did not win the contest, she has made a statement in the hearing impaired community. When asked about the thoughts that went through her mind when she was first asked to perform on national television, she expressed her desire "to inspire people, telling them never to limit themselves by their handicaps."

Beyond all the glitz and glamour, Lily continues to pursue music in her everyday life. She teaches percussion to the hearing impaired children at the Canossian School.

Imparting her skills in music to these children is like going back to her roots. Lily was chosen to be in the school percussion band when she was ten. From there, her passion and love for music grew.

She tasted her first fruits in music when she made her first solo public appearance at the Singapore Conference Hall in 1995. Lily vividly remembers, "I played 'Happy Mallets.' When it ended, I was showered with bouquets of roses and the audience clapped loudly. It was the most memorable one that I ever had."

All of these may sound impressive, but not many can understand the struggles behind the scenes. In a candid manner, Lily shares about the challenges that she face.

"With my present job as a band instructor, I have a lot of shortcomings. My scope is quite limited due to my lack of knowledge in music. Now, I mostly arrange scores for easy-playing so that deaf children will be able to enjoy it and at the same time, they will understand the fundamentals better."

Challenges are not only found in her work place. Lily expresses loneliness at times "Perhaps my deafness separates me from the people around me. None of my deaf friends of my age range shares similar interests (music) as me." She shares that often, when she invites her hearing impaired friends for a music performance or workshop, none of them are interested.

The silence in Lily's world seemed to have amplified following the loss of her dad last year. But Lily is glad to receive the support from her family of fellow music enthusiasts. XTOMIC is a volunteer group specializing in performing arts.

Lily founded XTOMIC in year 2002. The XTOMIC has made itself heard in "A Nation in Concert" at the Esplanade last month. September was also an eventful month for XTOMIC as they have also staged overseas performances in Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

It is heartwarming to learn about the XTOMIC and their overseas debut. Back in Singapore however, the pragmatic local scene requires some cultural fine-tuning.

Lily describes the development of performing arts in Singapore as "limited." She disappointedly adds that it is "hard to pursue music here, and I am still struggling."

Despite her tough and lonely journey in pursuing her dreams to study music and perform internationally, Lily continues to hold them close to her heart.

She believes that she has learned to overcome problems in life during the process. In her usual spirited self, Lily encourages the public to "never give up. Make opportunities and they will continue to knock on your door. If you keep on waiting, nothing will happen. No risk, no gain."

It is in times like this that Lily's tenacious spirit shines. Like gold that has been through the refining fire, Lily's undaunted spirit presses on. Despite facing setbacks in her audition with a couple of local arts and music school, Lily aims to explore overseas.

Perhaps her background served as the refining fire that has crafted a piece of refined gold over the past 27 years. But it has yet to be transformed into a jewel. Lily continues to search for her market and career path as she turns into a full time performer next year.

Unlike an over-night star with a one-hit wonder, Lily continues to resonate in the hearts of Singaporeans as a brave girl. She may not know the cause of her deafness, but she certainly knows what she wants to achieve ahead of her.

For now, this gem continues to sparkle in the lives of those around her. Lily will be teaching 3 hearing impaired boys till the end of this year.

And so, she returns to the "doompt, cha, doompt doompt, cha," in the four walls of a centre for children with special needs. Lily will then venture fully into professional performing arts and beyond the shores next year.

Even for those of us who are not too musically inclined, you probably would have felt the beat behind these words. If you haven't, then be prepared to be all ears to Singapore's Miss Beethoven, as she increases her volume and shout out to the world of music which knows no boundaries.

I've achieved my goal in getting ABRSM Grade 5 in Concert Percussion! Now, I'm taking another step: ABRSM Grade 6 in Concert Percussion in March 2007.

I've got to work harder to get money to pay for its exam and lesson fees. Hope this problem will be over soon. I must tide over it!

My Real Me?

Yesterday, I went down to LASALLE-SIA for a discussion meeting. My needs were discussed: note-taker, aural/ear training and performing with students. I will face alot of problems with transcription that will be mostly used throughout music courses. This means I've to write melody while listening to it.

I was informed that I need to go for an audition again and it will be in March 2007. If there is any improvement on my aural skills, they will consider taking me in. And, I'm informed that a music course in World Music will be removed from their system soon.

Now, I look at other course options at LASALLE-SIA:
BA (Hons) Jazz, Popular Music, Classical Music or World Music
This programme focuses on a range of current music practices from "East and West", including improvisation and notation, and broad stylistic awareness, reflects a changed musical environment that values diversity in the skills of its composers and performers. What if my application to music studies is rejected again? *pondering*
Perhaps, I will try to apply for other courses in Musical Theatre and Theatre Arts at the same time. Will make enjuries about their requirements soon.
Next year, when doing my full-time freelance arts education/performing work, I'll be more into song-signing, poetry, story-telling, percussion and acting. So, what area shall these relate to? Deaf arts?

Whenever I watch percussion concerts, trainings or workshops, I somehow feel loneliness. This has been with me since I was ten years old. Perhaps, my deafness separates me from hearing people around me. There are none of my deaf friends (around my age) who shares similar interests as me.
Often, I ask my deaf & hearing friends out for these kinda of activities, they may not be interested. In the end, I'm doing things alone.
However, there is a Percussion Band at Canossian School. I'm very happy to work there to teach percussion music every Saturday. I love that feeling!

But somehow, sign language binds me to the people around me. It's a nice feeling that I ever have... This also applies to song-signing that binds music and sign language together and form another style of performing arts.

So, I conclude that I like to work with deaf people. But now, what's my real me when it comes to performing?

Hard to Let it Go

Swimming alone at Clementi Complex just now... 15 laps of breakstroke swim, 15 laps of freestyle swim.

During these freestyle swim, I suddenly thought of XTOMIC. I built this XTOMIC till now, it's time for me to leave it. Hard to let it go! I miss those moments I spent there. Practised, practised, performed, performed... My most favourite items is "If We Hold On Together" and "Journey". As well as, I love to perform the duets with Richmond, Jason, Melvin and Aaron. "Guan Huai Fang Shi", "One Sweet Day", "At The Beginning", "Almost Here", "Elephant Medley (Moulin Rouge)", and "Thank God I Found You". I hope to perform again: "Moulin Rouge Musical", "Come What May" and "The Gift".

XTOMIC's selling market "Larger Than Life" is still hot though it is boring to the old members - Huishan, Lydia and me. Amazingly, it is still going hot for almost 4 years. It's very unique in XTOMIC!
I believe that Huishan will lead XTOMIC with a few new hot dancing items soon.

However, still I have to let it go one day. I have taken up a sign language class to keep away from XTOMIC practices in Oct-Nov.

Suddenly, I stopped swimming. Held my breath and kept myself in the pool for a while.. Reminded me of the movie "Children of a Lesser god". Swimming in a pool is total deafness. Even though there were alot of swimmers, I couldn't hear anything. It's a total silence. So, I hummed a tune to myself and began to think of some things... Continued my swim... Now, I'm in a kinda of mood where hurtings & problems filled my heart. Someone, help take them away from me... *praying*

Post Feelings

After the XTOMIC trip and IDDeaf celebrations, I've been feeling moody. But I'm free from some of responsibilities - XTOMIC.

Usually, I slept quite late and it was 3AM-4AM. But now, I sleep much earlier than 11AM. Now, I'm more clear about my goals and vision. I focus more on my personal commitments, knowing I'm moving on to my next chapter - my full-time performing. Much happier..

Deaf Culture Shock

Returned home from SAFRA, Mount Faber. Today was the International Day for the Deaf for the Deaf people to celebrate together.

As said by Mr. Lim Chin Heng, the International Day for the Deaf is held on the fourth Sunday of September every year. It is an extremely important day for the deaf community all over the world.

Guess I got the Deaf culture shock. Needs time to adjust..
Two days ago, I arrived Singapore from Kuala Lumpur and Penang. It was really an enjoyable trip and I met several deaf people from KL & Penang. XTOMIC and I presented our beautiful workshop and performances to them. They love our shows very much!
When I attended the IDDeaf High-Tea, I got lost and sianz.. I couldn't get what other people signed to me. Oh my gosh! Culture shock!! The feeling is very different!!

Now, I miss those moments that I attended the WFDeaf Camp (in Brisbane, Australia). Also, in Kuala Lumpur and Penang. I wish I could attend other events organised in different countries.. Hmm, I hope I can attend the WFDeaf Congress in Spain in 2007. *winks*

XTOMIC's Performing Trip to KL & Penang

This year, it was XTOMIC's first time to perform overseas. Hina, Geeta, Angela, Melvin, SaltyBanana, KidZ and I were going to Kuala Lumpur & Penang. 15 September to 22 September. 8 days!

Really enjoyable and full of beautiful, fun memories! I'm asked to organise one more performing trip again. Maybe, it will be Japan, Europe or farthest country. As well, we can organise a world tour. :p

Hahaa, the trip started on:
Day One - 15 September, Friday
It was a very heavy rain in Singapore. Arrived KL in the evening. Brought to the Majudiri 'Y' office to see Lucy about details on the performances and workshop. We were informed that the workshop needed to be cancelled because of mis-communication - the school's having its school holidays. And, we were furnished with other details.
Then, we went back to the YMCA to see the rehearsal by the Vibrant Hands while waiting for a friend of Hina. Before the end of the night, we went for seafood dinner and shopping.

Day Two - 16 September, Saturday
A new day arrived. We started with shopping at Mid-Valley. Shopping, shopping till 4PM. We returned to the YMCA for our first performance that was scheduled at 7PM. It was a small IDD celebration with deaf people and this was like a casual gathering. We performed three items to kick it off. As a part of the Deaf Culture, we chatted away. And at the same time, we had dinner buffet and games.
Surprisingly, I met Anwar. He was the guy whom Alfred, Gophi, Jasmine and I made friends during the WFDeaf Youth Camp in Brisbane. It has been 6 years that I hadn't seen him. :) Just wondering how my (overseas) friends have been doing...

Day Three - 17 September, Sunday
It was our big day. We went down to DBKL for the carnival and concert. I was very stressed! This was my first time to perform for the deaf audience. Not only me but all of us were nervous. Especially Geeta, she worked very hard and she did her very best!
Normally, XTOMIC perform for the hearing audience that may not know much about deafness and sign language. So bochap! Most of us didn't give our best shot. But this time, we presented our best shows. Great experience for us though!
Besides XTOMIC, there were other performing groups: HI! Theatre, SSD, Vibrant Hands & YMCA. Their shows were beautiful and the audience loved them very much! :)

Day Four - 18 September, Monday
KidZ and Geeta went back to Singapore in a coach bus. SaltyBanana, Melvin, Angela, Hina and I proceeded to Penang, together with 2 staff from Penang. Upon our destination, we were brought to a tuition centre for deaf children. Then, we went to the Long Beach where there were alot of good, delicious food. Little shopping. Finally, we returned to the YMCA hostel. We were very tired.

Day Five - 19 September, Tuesday
In an early morning, we went down for a breakfast. This meal was much better than the YMCA KL's special meal set: Nasi Lemak. After our breakfast, we went down to a deaf school, comprising of 2 sections: primary & secondary.
Till now, I am still confused by the levels: F1-4 and T1-4. Different from Singapore's deaf education that we focus on one language - English, these schools in Malaysia use English and Bahasa. More difficult for learning, I agree. To me, it is Bi-Bi (Bilingual-Bicultural) and yet, I do not know much about this Bi-Bi. Will read up more on it since it's now in rage. Singapore hasn't opened up to it yet, I think I'm right about it. If I'm wrong, do correct me by sending me private emails.
Over there, XTOMIC and I had our workshop with less than 10 kids. Supposedly, we had expected around 20 kids. But most of them were having their exams. What a bad timing for us it was! Anyway, the kids enjoyed the workshop, especially the dance steps of Larger Than Life.
After the workshop, we went for shopping and sight-seeing. Tried different foods, especially Laska.
Then, we went back to the hostel. We prepared ourselves for our next workshop and performance that was scheduled at 8PM. Alot of deaf people attended it and had filled the hall. WOW! They enjoyed it, especially learning the LTL dance steps. And, we had our interaction with them. Alot of "HOW" questions were bombed towards us and I gave away a lot of my namecards. Lastly, we went for supper. What a very long day we had!

Day Six - 20 September, Wednesday
We had dim sum for our breakfast. And, we rode back to KL in a coach bus. Free & easy programme for everyone. We deserved a good break after doing workshops and performances! Well-done, everyone!!

Day Seven - 21 September, Thursday
A whole free & easy day for us, too.. We went to KLCC for photo-taking. All of us except me went shopping. I went to the Aquaria that is much different from Singapore's Underwater World in Sentosa. Fishes, insects, small animals. Most of them inhibit in East Malaysia and parts of Malaysia. I took alot of photos of them. :)
An evening approached. We decided to meet Lucy and other deaf people for dinner and drinks. Had a hearty chat with them. A relaxing day!!

Day Eight - 22 September, Friday
Before we returned to Singapore, we had our little shopping and fun moments - henna.

Hmmm, there are a lot of things that I have learnt from the trip. About myself, SaltyBanana, Melvin, KidZ, Angela, Hina and Geeta. Laughter, tears, joy, model-photo taking sessions, different foods, shopping. Deaf culture and sign language..
After all, it's my last time with them. I won't perform with them anymore. I'm gonna miss them!!

Time for me to move on to my next chapter.. I'm gonna into my full-time performing next year. Will keep in touch with you all, XTOMIC!!

More Confidence

Last night, XTOMIC and I put up our performance at Furama Hotel. It was the Juniors Chambers International's dinner event.

Kidz, Hina, SaltyBanana, Angela and Matthew performed the item - Larger Than Life. It got hiccups in the start. Partly the staff's fault. Before the event, we told him that the music needs to start straightaway with the appropriate volume level. Instead, he started the music and then, its volume was increased from zero to 6.5. It led to the late start. After all, they did it very well.

Then, it was my turn to perform the solo item - If We Hold On Together. It was a time for me to sign without a reflective signer. It gained more of my confidence and it has shown that I am capable of performing without any help. Kidz, thanks for this support you've given me.

So now, I guess I will continue to keep it up. At the same time, I will do the same thing to my performing item - One Day I'll Fly Away. I will work harder!!

SSD's National Day Performance

Today is my holiday since my workplace is closed for holidays from 8 August to 10 August. I'm happy to have these holidays!!

Today, I went down to Keming Primary School to help in the smooth running of SSD's performance. Hmm, this is my first experience doing deaf children's performance. It was different from mainstream children's performance I did last 2 years ago. I learnt some things from it:
- Perhaps, song-signing may be out for deaf children.
- Dance movement is good and enjoyable. But it should be simplified.
- Story-telling is another good option and I believe it will help enrich their general knowledge.
- Different environments of stage performances should apply, like open air hall, enclosed hall, enclosed MSSL, size, lighting, so on.
- Good attitude, discipline and punctuality must be practised.

After all, I enjoyed it very much. Very fun! :)

A Nation in Concert II

Back by popular demands, the event "A Nation in Concert II" will be taken place at Esplanade Concert Hall. 9 September 2006, Saturday. 3PM & 7.30PM.

XTOMIC will be back again. Representing the Singapore Association for the Deaf (SADeaf), we will be performing the two same items. Larger than Life. One Day I'll Fly Away. But there's a little difference in our people and choreography.
Not only us but there are other organizations taking part in it. Association for Persons with Special Needs (ASPN), Handicaps Welfare Association (HWA), Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH), Student Advisory Centre, Yellow Ribbon Fund, and SPACES Community. DO CHECK THEM OUT!!

Evelyn Glennie

Thanks, VSA for giving me this opportunity to meet Evelyn Glennie again this year. This moment had been inpiring me since then!

Just now, I went to attend the pre-concert talk at Library@Esplanade. I was surprised that Mr. Jonathan Fox was the speaker. He was my former percussion teacher!!
I missed earlier part where he performed on snare drum!!! :( Again, I couldn't understand what he was talking about. Perhaps, it was too fast for me to catch up what he was saying. I guess I'm very DEAF-minded by now!
Ha, it was a nice feeling to meet him again.. :) From there, I hope to keep in touch with him often. Perhaps, I may need his help one day!

After this talk, I went together with some people of VSA to watch Evelyn Glennie performing on percussion. It was really SHIOK!! WOW!! Refreshing music!!! At the intermission, we went down to the Stage Door to meet her as it was arranged. I clean forgot about it till I was told about it. I should have brought a friend who can help interpret for me.
During the chat with her, I got myself lost. Blur, blur, everything.. I didn't get to ask her at that moment. But I guess, Mr. Christopher helped me ask her on my behalf. It was regarding my future prospects in percussion or performance. I really need to know what he did ask her or what she said about it. I've already emailed to him and hopefully, he can be able to give me his reply soon. Me, very anxious!!

Hmmm, well... she's very good!! Of course, I cannot compare myself to her. We're different from each other. She got her comprehensive training and she got to learn it at her very young age of 12 (I suppose so). She got lots of support from her family.
As for me, I grow in a different environment from her. My parents had no or little education and my mother leads her very simple life. My learning process has been slow because of my deafness and lack of news/gossip from people around me. Some people around me asked me why I did not go for music studies in the first place. No one advised me this and that... Now, I've been working so hard to achieve my goals! However, time is not on my side. :( Anyway, I try my best as I can!! *fingers crossed*

Unfair Audition Results

Received the letter from Lasalle-sia about the results of the audition last Friday. It said that my application to July 2006 Intake was rejected because of my poor aural and technical skills. To me, it was unfair!

During the audition, I was very nervous that I couldn't produce my best shot at my second song. The first song went well. I knew that I fared quite badly at this part. Then, it came to the questionable issue on my aural skills. The three interviewers tested my aural skills and I was very honest about it. I do not have any proper aural skills. However, there was alternative aural test for hearing impaired, I told them. But still, they kept telling me that the aural skills will be based on hearing standards. I had to argue with them over this issue since I'm deaf and I believe that there will be other alternatives to it.

Besides this, I told them that I applied for the Intake 2007, not 2006, to make sure that there was no any miscommunications among us. In their fast reply, I needed to re-apply for the Intake 2007 and to see if my aural skills will be improved, they will reconsider it. I was upset about it since I was treated like a hearing person whom they expect something out of it. For example, when I speak well, they will expect me to lip-read, with no need of learning sign language.
Again, I felt that I was wasting my time over it.

Above all of this, the results was unfair just because of my deafness. I refused to accept it. My overseas applications had been successful whereas, here in Singapore, the NAFA closed its doors to deaf who apply for music courses. And, the LASALLE-SIA may not accept deaf. These are solely based on the reasons where aural skills lack in deaf and perhaps, they dare not adjust their curriculum in this subject for deaf. It's very obvious!!

I'm very sad!
I hate it when they expect me to behave like a hearing person! They should accept me that I'm deaf here and I admit I'm aurally-challenged with my musical talents!!

Moving on to my Dreams

I just applied for a full-time course in World Music at LASALLE-SIA. Meanwhile, I hope to get application forms from overseas institutions (US & Australia) soon. I hope to enrol myself in 2007. In a such way, I will have more time for other things - building network & portfolio, reading books on percussion and music education, polishing up my percussion techniques, getting an instrument (marimba) and saving enough money for my survival only.

My plans for this year have been changed. I abandoned my idea or plan of attending the WFDeaf Conference in Spain. My top priority is to concentrate on my percussion music. I must bear it in my mind!

With total faith, trust and help from a friend, I'm really moving on to my dreams. Now, I dare to dream BIG, BIGGER.. I'm very glad to have him as my good friend and he promises me that he won't give up on me no matter what happens. He's now helping me with other matters like building network, sponsorships, performing work.
Not only him but I still have other friends who support me all the way. They are always there for me no matter where they are. Till now, I'm grateful to have them with me all the way. :)

Although there was no English subtitles on my story, many viewers were able to understand my signing and speech. Clear and sharp shots!

After the two shows, many viewers sms me many messages..
"Congrats, I'm proud of you..."
"Cool gal, I admire you for being strong to overcome many obstacles..."
"...When you need to confide in someone, do sms me for a chat, OK?"
"...After this show, hope you will have sponsors for your studies..."
"Stay focused, never give up.. I'm proud of you!"

After watching, I got mixed feelings. Paiseh, Excited, Hopeful, Touched... I shed a few tears and I realized that a lot of hardwork and sacrifices made me what I am now. I cannot turn back right now. I only know practices take alot of time and thus, I cannot take up a full-time job. The only way for me is to take some part-time jobs. And to build a career in performing & teaching (music). And hopefully, many sponsors will come forward and help me. *praying*

Hmmm, this is my great honour to be featured in the documentary. My story will be made known to almost everyone across this island and I hope my message: "Your dream is your hope; Hope keeps you alive; Hope gives you strength to go via the road less traveled; Life without a dream is no life at all" will be reached to them. To keep this dream going on, it takes alot of challenges to be overcome, especially for a disabled or ill person.
As for me, I chose this path as it was full of challenges. Not many people can do it. I know once one makes sacrifices, he/she shall not regret it. There is no turning point and I'm carrying it on, no matter how much problems I'm facing.

Ha, the process of the filming was interesting. I guess I enjoyed this. However, I felt that I was not very good at being interviewed. Quite shy.
The crew are friendly and cool!

By the way, my story will be shown on TV. Channel U. 19th January 2006, Thursday. 9.30PM. I'm so excited and I look forward to it!!
However, I'm informed that there are no English subtitles though I asked the director whether it is possible to put them. She was unable to help this because she had to type the subtitles manually and she does not have the decoder (that is highly expensive, I heard). So sorry to those Deaf viewers for having no subtitles. :(

As the token of appreciation, she will give me the VCD after the show. If anyone misses the show, do let me know and I will take note of it. But I do not know when I will have the VCD.

Good Experience

Just now, today was my first public performance as a Guest Performer. Although I made a few mistakes, it was a good experience where I need time to overcome my shortcomings.

Ha, I got stage fright. My heart was pounding. My legs were shaking.. Heavy breathing.. It was because I was very stressed by the presence of Mr. Syed and others (Jurami, Lilian). Even, the filming added to my stress.

For your information, Media Development Authority (MDA) has commissioned a filming company, 360 Productions Pte Ltd, to produce a new series of half-hour, 13-episode youth program to be telecast on Channel U starting 5 January 2006.
The objective of this series is to serve as a "platform" -- to document the lives of today's Singaporean youths, for them to express their views, passions, inner longings or even the delusions that they feel. Basically it's about how these youths connect to themselves and to those around them, such as their family, friends and society.

So, this team has decided to feature my story in the youth series entitled "Youth Decode". That's why the team was there to film my performance.

Thanks, Huishan, Aaron and Claudine for coming down and support me. Glad to have them being there..

The next day will be my 2nd performance as the Guest Percussionist at Istana Park.

Deaf Musician's Thoughts

From my day one, I automatically became the musician of the percussion ensemble. I became more committed and I had more self-practices. And, I attended the band practices. This made me recall my days at the secondary school when I attended the band practices.
During the practices, those moments were my challenges I was facing - cases of mis-communication, catching up most of the conversations. However, I enjoy being with the ensemble.

Let me introduce these two groups: Studio Percussion Unit (SPU) and 2-FOUR Percussion.
They were formed in April 2005, under the support of the Percussive Arts Studios led by Mr. Damien Lim. The SPU is a 'fusion percussion ensemble', performing a unique blend of modern percussion ensemble music, mixed with a fusion of Asian and world percussion instruments. It also provides band backups for vocals as well as local musical. The SPU strives to increase the awareness of Singapore's own unique multi-racial percussion instruments and music through their performances.

The 2-FOUR Percussion team performs as the youth wing of the FOUR-4 Percussion team. It is well versed in Brazilian samba percussion as well as its own blend of innovative percussion, pots & pans percussion, and local ethnic percussion. It aims to provide a platform for young aspiring percussionists to discover and develop themselves in the field of percussion performances.

For now, I'm in the 2-FOUR Percussion Team. I'm the oldest member of all in these 2 groups. It doesn't matter; I'm still YOUNG!!
I hope to overcome the gap between myself and the youths. I have yet to make friends with them except for Kim. Also, I hope to learn some things from them.

4 days to my show... I will be playing 2 items on xylophone. And, I'll play another song, "Ethnic" with 3 instruments (small gong, kompang and jingle bells).
Just now, I got the practice on this "Ehtnic" and till now, I'm still blur. I need to ask again about it tomorrow. Hope this will be solved soon before the show.

Another Update on my Performance

With regards to the Percussion Fiesta, another update is that I will perform another item: 12 Days of Christmas. These 2 items I will perform are quite fast-beat and I need to practise more on my rhythm technique.
And at the same time, I'm looking forward to the (combined) percussion rehearsal on this weekend.

XTOMIC-ers, I'm truly sorry that I am unable to join you all for the BBQ gathering on next Wednesday/Thursday. I'll be very busy with lots of self-practices and rehearsals till next Sunday. For that, I know that I'm building my career in music and performing. Hope you will understand it and there're alot of chances for me to join you all to catch up with old times or even for games on Sequence (or mahjong). Enjoy yourselves, guys and ladies!!

Long, Tiring Day Yet Achieving

Today was my very long, tiring day and yet, I achieved something small. I know that I made my step - joining the percussion ensemble. Just now, I went for my self-practice after my teaching work at Canossian School.

From there, I made friends with Kim Peng, who is the production manager. She's very young!! 19!!! Another music enthusiastic... We both talked alot of things about ourselves and we discovered that we share a common goal - to share the beauty of music with people through educating.

She told me that I can earn some allowances from that percussion ensemble through performances. At the same time, I can learn more things to help overcome my shortcomings. And, she told me about a diploma in percussion. This is something new that I haven't heard of. So, I'm really interested in it. Yeah, I'm working on applying for this, too..

Alright, another update about my percussion performance is that as the Guest Percussionist, I will be performing on 1 item: Bayport Sketch. It's quite rhythmically. I will bring more updates from every practices I attend.. Do keep a lookout for it... :)

CLAP! event @ AMK

A few days ago, I volunteered to teach simple sign language to public at Ang Mo Kio as I know it helps raise deaf awareness and it's meaningful.
Just now, at the "CLAP!@AMK" event, there were some performances done by Down Sydrome's Association, SADeaf-VSH and HWA. Their performances were great and their talents or interests in performing arts can be showcased through this event.

Never expected that the radio deejay, Danny (who was the MC at that event) that he has a little knowledge of sign language through his religion - Christianity. With his humble knowledge, he helped it too. He told the public that sign language is a way for the deaf community to be connected with the other side of the world - hearing community. I was very impressed by him.

Thanks to Aaron, I could be able to know my stand at the event. Although he has no experience with interpreting for the deaf, it was a good learning for him. Who knows, one day, he will be a better interpreter registered with the SADeaf?

Ha, I suggested to perform the song-signing item "If We Hold On Together" after teaching sign language to the public. Though it was a last-minute notice, it's still meaningful to me.
Then, this simple gesture came to my mind: "WHY DON'T XTOMIC DO THAT BEFORE THEY GIVE THEIR PERFORMANCES?" It'll be great to raise deaf awareness to the public.

And, I notice that item "If We Hold On Together" is great or popular. Everytime I finished performing it, some people approached me and gave me some compliments. My first time for this was that MP Zainul Abidin Kasheed at Tampines (Giving Tree @North East) shook my hand when I was going to get ready to be the reflective signer for the next item.

I guess this song is quite sentimental to most of the people. Perhaps, I'm the one of them... And, it carries my feelings when I am still chasing my dreams to be a recognised performer over the world.

My thoughts...
I'm so excited to be part of this concert!! Also, I'm asked to be the full member of the ensemble. Of course, I love to be the one and at the same time, I hope I can gain plenty of experiences from this band.

For many years, I have been looking for a percussion ensemble to join. And, I couldn't have XTOMIC to form the percussion emsemble of deaf players immediately. Alright, I hope that I can share my experiences with XTOMIC if they wanna perform percussion on an adhoc basis in future.

A Nation In Concert

My group, XTOMIC and I got our second chances to perform at the Esplanade again. And, our first time was that we performed with the CCCrush in November 2004. Haha..
Yesterday, we had our great memorable time over there: practising, performing, doing thick, heavy make-up, wearing funny costumes, taking photos and playing around. We performed two items: 'Backstreet Boys - Larger Than Life' and 'Moulin Rouge - One Day I'll Fly Away' in dance-signing for two shows. These performances were the most entertaining with our youth vitality and energy. And as for our second item, it had brought alot of emotions to the audience because it was done by three Deaf performers, Angeline, Huishan and me. Most of my friends liked this second item so much that they felt like crying.. They kept on saying that it was really meaningful and NICE! Beyond description!!

Well, we didn't know how good we were on the stage when performing. And, I hear from the production team that the VCD will be out soon. That'll be great!!

Guess that this XTOMIC has come its long way and I'm glad to have this recognition gained together by everyone in XTOMIC. :D We all will continue to keep this work up.. Perhaps, one day, we can hold our own musical concert at a small-scale. Heehee..

Busy Forever

It seems that I'm very busy forever, and I do not know when I can get my breathing space where I can relax.

What have I been doing since then?
- My filming just started yesterday. It took almost a whole day and I reached home very late at nearly 2AM. Last week, I went for the audition on "The Story of David & Susan" with a simple thought of having fun. And, I was chosen to be the main lead of "Susan". This schedule is quite heavy as we hope to complete everything within a very short time. This must be done by 7 August as I'm told.

- Music teaching work is getting heavier. I have to prepare the curriculum for new assignments. And, I have to look for more song scores for the children to play.

- XTOMIC practices. There are some upcoming performances like A Nation In Concert and NDP Heartland Celebrations at Tampines.

- Music gigs. I have been liaising with Cheryl for these music gigs. And, I need to build my music career in percussion. Needs to earn more income. Since I have decided to stop taking up sign language assignments, my income will be greatly affected.

- My KFC work is back. Only once a week if I'm free. If my week is too packed, I won't take up any roster for time being.

8 July - Canossian Eduplex

After reading Hau En's entry on Canossian Eduplex, I felt like writing here..

Yeah, I had lots of fun over there but it was tiring to conduct 4-5 songs (Twinkle Twinkle Little Stars, Cha Cha, This Old Man, Thai-Song & Skaters' Waltz) over again for 3 hours. Mr. Pisit was also conducting the other CCPS Band at the same time.
I guess all the kids were tired to play these same songs repeatedly. But they do not mind playing again, especially for This Old Man. This song is quite easy for them to play along. Quite popular...

Hearing this song, "This Old Man", it brought me lots of old memories that I had spent during my old band days in Canossian School for the Hearing Impaired. I missed them alot!!

Met several people over there - Sr. Jack, Sr. Gerry, Sr. Anne, Charlene, Chaoqun, Kim Poh, Jenny Ho, Karen and others.. I'm quite surprised to see them! They might catch my kids' performance and even my conducting... :-O

Hau En... Glad to have her in 2 songs that she had performed before! She's really great! I really wanna share my music knowledge with her. I'm thinking of going down to SACSS to drop by when I'm free and in this way, I can see Hau En, Jurami and others...

After all, I really enjoyed this at Canossian Eduplex!

Obligation vs. Passion

Last Monday, I met Mr. Syed to discuss on my music future. So I got the start. And, I'll buck myself up for that start.
Meanwhile, he asked me not to go for the mass signing. He asked me to join in the drumming activity that clashes with the mass signing on 9 August. Thinking of these 2 events - mass signing & drumming, I felt like being at a standstill.

"Which one, Mass Signing or Drumming, shall I choose?"
"I've put alot of efforts into mass signing - I went down to different schools to teach. Shall I stay on?"

My good friend sms me about 'Obligation vs. Passion'. I came to realise that the mass signing is more likely to be seen as my obligation for the Deaf Community, in a hope of clearing more misconceptions among the public. But as for the drumming, it's for myself to gain more experience in percussion.
Right now, I'm planning to build my music career in teaching and performing (percussion). At the same time, I may abandon SADeaf, except for the XTOMIC. That's, I may have stopped teaching sign language to classes and I may have stopped those volunteer work such as YouthBeat.
Therefore, I chose the Drumming activity and I decided to back out from the Mass Signing. So, my last day of the Mass Signing will be on 30 July, instead of 9 August. I'll be helping Zach & Pet out at Carnival@Marina as the runner on that day.

Therapeutic Song-Signing

A friend gave me the url on Music Therapy. Quite informative! This inspired me and then, I came up with this idea of having Therapeutic Song-Signing.

What does this therapeutic song-signing have in itself? How shall we do about this? Who will benefit from this? Why is it so? When will it apply to these people? *pondering*

Perhaps, we can focus on the main points - improvising, re-creating, composing, and listening to music. The simple exercises and learning in sign language will be included.
Those who wanna learn it, may not have a knowledge of sign language. But they surely have their basic capacity of music appreciation and expression.

This will be a great idea that I have ever... I will be gonna do research on this! :D

Building My Music Career

I'm really happy as I can be able to build my career in music, and I can gain some experience from this job. I guess this's my start since I'm given a part-time job of "Percussion Course Co-Instructor". This scope is to assist in coaching the kids towards a performance at the end of the course. At the same time, both of us will source or create instruments, as well as teach students simple beats. Then, complex rhythms and strokes will be introduced to the kids and let them expand on them using their creatively.

I only know this project will run every Monday, 1:30PM - 3:30PM at Anderson Primary School (Ang Mo Kio). Therefore, I'll be busy at that period.

Okay, all the best to me...

PATIENCE & PERSEVERANCE

I have been trying to get sponsorship to support my studies. I got a quite number of rejections and I'm almost devastated. NAC, Singapore Pools, Singapore Turf Club, so on.. Still waiting for the replies from LEE Foundation, Shaw Foundation and other corporate companies.. I will continue to send letters!

But somehow, I'm myself a very determined person!
If I miss the chance to study this degree in UK (by August/September), it does not mean I cannot go the next time. There are always open doors out there. I'm now having other options: going for cheaper overseas degrees, joining the other bands, conducting workshops, so on..

I have been contacting many persons for any advices and/or assistances. Kelvin Kew's really a great friend to me, he emailed his advice to me. Meanwhile, I'm trying to have a wide network of music, percussion and community of its special needs. One day, I'll be able to find work in this area although this is Singapore. POSSIBLE for me to find music teaching/performing work to support myself!! *screams*

I MUST KEEP GOING ON!!!

Drumming Explosion

After teaching my sign language class from 2pm to 5pm, I rushed down to the Boon Lay MRT. I was so excited that I had a quick bite and grabbed the best, front seat at the open field next to the MRT.

Watched all the performances played by Australia's Circle of Rhythm, Singapore's Percussion Assembly, India's Tribal Tide and Malaysia's Hands Percussion. They were really GREAT and SHIOK!! I bought the audio CD of the Circle of Rhythm and while getting their autographs, I found out that the trio had their experiences with the Deaf percussionists in Sydney and Melbourne. Even, they told Huishan and me that there are Deaf choir over there in Sydney. WOW!! That made me wanting to go over there to join them and perform together..

So, there is a closing celebration: The Stroj will be performing at the same venue on this coming weekend (24 June to 26 June). This group from Slovia is really SHIOK!! They will perform percussion with industrial things. It sounds like the STOMP.. Besides this loud noise, there will be fireworks... My friends, do come down and watch them.. You will be overwhelmed!! You will like it the best.. 100% guarantee!!

Community Drumming Festival - G8!

Finally, the Community Drumming Festival was over! Huishan, Nora, Lydia, Jinhe, Carlo, Handoko, Geeta and I had our three days of intensive rehearsals and throughout these days, we got ourselves screwed up! To some of us, it was really a training where we can sweat our fats out. Danced and played all the way...

Over there, we made friends with some of people - Jurami, Jenny and others. They were helpful to us.. :D Again, I met Mr. Syed. Kelvin Kew was there, too!!
Hmm, the event was wonderful! It was our learning experience and one day, we may play together again. :)

After all, we really ENJOYED it. The sounds of beating were still playing in our heads for some time.. Hahaa!

Percussion Clinic

Attended the Percussion Clinic that was conducted by Kelvin Kew at the Plaza Singapura's YAMAHA Combo Store. This clinic was about the hand drumming. Quite interesting and educational...!

Although I didn't understand much what Kelvin said, I can say, at least I can have my learning experience over there. Perhaps, I can find out more details on this hand drumming and other topics/instruments by myself..

Hmm, Kelvin looks so cute with his pigtail and he looks like the young Anakin in the Star Wars - Phantom Menace (Episode 1). :D
Heard from my friend that Kelvin was once from the Heartbeat Percussion led by Mr. Syed. I somehow realised that the percussion circle in Singapore is quite small and we could know one another sooner or later.
And now, Kelvin owns his business where he can educate the public on percussion and others. Quite meaningful to teach like this.. That's highly admirable..! One day, I will have my own business like them - Mr. Syed, Mr. Teow and Kelvin Kew!!

My Birthday Wishlist

My birthday is coming soon on 30 May... Hmmm, Huishan asked me to put up my birthday wishlist in my blog. Well, my wishlist is too expensive for them and therefore, I dare not put it up here. I would rather not have them buying me presents that I may not need.

Perhaps, I may not spend my birthday on the day itself. I will be hanging around at the TYPE KFC after my sign language teaching work at Raffles Girls' School.

Right now, my wish for this year is to get enough funding and necessary materials for my UK studies. Hope this wish will be fulfilled... *praying*

Singapore Arts Festival is Back!!

Singapore Arts Festival is back!! And, Singapore Street Festival is back again!! Street Revolution still stands in our hearts!! I'm so excited about this. Ha, I even marked those dates in "My Adventures in 2005" to watch those performances in percussion music. PERCUSSION is UNIVERSAL and GREAT!!

Mr. Syed approached me about this Community Drumming Festival. And, I do not expect myself to participate in this event and I look forward excitedly to it!! Right now, I need to get 30-50 participants as a group under SADeaf XTOMIC as I promised. Here the details are amended below:

[Invitation to Participate in Community Drumming Festival 2005]
There is a Community Drumming Festival held from 15 June to 18 June 2005 focusing on a performance consisting of various ethnic percussion instruments by 3000 performers. This serves as a platform for youths to acquire aesthetic skills for life as well as to introduce passion and appreciation for the arts and culture.

Students from schools are invited to participate and they will be trained by professional percussionists and a chance to interact with the various renowned artistes for the event. The students will also be awarded participation points under the CCA grading system.

The People's Association Youth Movement(PAYM) is a non-profit youth organisation that aims to involve young people in youth-initiated wholesome projects and activities. Since its inception in 1971, the PAYM is proud to have made tremendous impact on the lives of many youths and in the process, developed many outstanding youth leaders.
As part of a series of events for PAYM Youth Month Celebrations, the Youth Executive Committees(YECs) in the South East Region will be organising "Community Drumming Festival" in conjunction with the Singapore Arts Festival 2005. This Festival will see an estimated turnout of 5000 participants and audience that will come together for a highly powerful drumming performance through a fusion of oriental and western beats.

Truly grateful to Nora for helping me with my seeking financial support.

Just now, Nora and I worked together to send the Straits Time Life an email on my music story, with a hope to have sponsorship support from the readers. If the Straits Time covers my story, it may reach out to more readers indeed.
Earlier on, most of you know that my article was published in Lianhe Zaobao. From there, there were only 2 readers who called in. It was sadly disappointing!

Sad & Worried

Just now, I received an email reply from Sr. Anne that she presented my case at Canossian School's Board Meeting. From there, they won't help in my funding. And they suggested that I have to approach some corporate companies like LEE Foundation for financial support. Hmm, I'm a little upset. But I am not really disappointed or angry as I do not put any high hopes in this Canossian School.

It's alright with me.. And now, I have to buck myself up to send letters to corporate companies. I will continue to do so until I have enough funding. *praying hard*

Now, I'm worried about myself.. I guess I need to stop my work at KFC for some time. I have to spend more time on what I need very much to do. Meanwhile, I've made some plans:

Backing out from SADeaf-IDDeaf's Interactive Carnival on 20 May.

Stepping down from XTOMIC as Chairman on 29 May.

Taking up the last sign language teaching batch of June-July: perhaps 2-3 classes.

Writing resignation letters to SADeaf and KFC.

I know there are alot of things for me to do.. and still, I have to take a small step at one time. At the same time, I really need moral support from you all. It's very terrible doing everything on my own.. Sometimes, I have been bottling everything inside of me since then. My friends & readers out there, be there with me... Do pray for me and I'll be grateful...

Just received an email from Wolverhampton University that I got a place!!! That's another great news to me!

They told me that they enjoyed watching the music video.. Also, they hope that I can take up their offer to study music!!
